The Maestro Of Indian Classical Guitar

Barunkumar Pal was born in Bengal, India to an enlightened musical family. His father was an accomplished Sitar player who initiated Barun into the world of Indian Classical Music. In an atmosphere saturated with music and some of India'a greatest musicians, Barunkumar spent his youth fascinated by music which he absorbed quickly and developed into a child prodigy.

He began playing guitar for All India Radio in solo, duet, trio and orchestral settings in 1951 while still a boy.

Even at that early age, Barun's fascination towards the Hawaiian Guitar led to his lifelong single minded dedication towards his Instrument. He made some basic changes to the instrument by adding plucked strings (known as Chikari) and sympathetic strings (known as Tarab). He also pioneered a series of structural changes to make this instrument amenable to the depths and tonal qualities of Indian Classical Music. The development of this instrument has been a passionate and continuous process for Barun over three decades.

His Guru, Pandit Ravi Shankar said, "Barun is an outstanding Hawaiian Guitar player of North Indian Classical Music. I recommend him as a top concert artist and teacher. I am sure, he will be a great success where ever he performs."
